ARK ISTANBUL VESSEL CONSTRUCTION Hakan Kahraman, who is one of the authorities of the NYC – ARK Partnership that signed a contract for the construction of 4 new vessels in China and whom we consulted on the matter, stated the following: “There are 40 private shipyards in Turkey that build and maintain vessels. 4 of them are on the Black Sea and 36 of them are in Tuzla. In this year, there are 53 vessels in the workbenches of these shipyards. 33 of them are tankers, 8 are tugboats, 5 of them cargo – dry cargo vessels and 7 of them are yachts. These shipyards have become experts in the production of 5 – 15 thousand tons (dwt) chemical tankers and of yachts, the length of latter exceeding 40 meters. The largest cargo ship built in these shipyards is of 16 thousand tons. Today, the global vessel demand is mainly for 25 – 75 thousand tons vessels. Today, vessels amounting to 170 million tons are currently being built in the 300 shipyards located in 32 countries of the world. Japan, Korea and China are the largest manufacturers of the sector”. He further stated the following: “Although we a country that is so much close to Europe, surrounded by seas from 3 sides and having such educated personnel, we have a tiny number of shipyards.”
